The Donkey Sanctuary near Sidmouth is set in tranquil, unspoilt farmland and countryside, is both pushchair and wheelchair friendly and offers free entry!
The Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary is a Quality Assured Visitor Attraction sure to delight families of all ages. Admission and car parking are free, the Sanctuary considers that, being a charity dependent on the support of the public, visitors should be able to see the work done, free of charge. Of course, if visitors would like to make a donation at the time of visit that would be much appreciated. The Sanctuary is open 365 days a year from 9.00am until dusk.
Meet the Donkeys - there are about 400 donkeys to meet! Some have been rescued following mistreatment or neglect; some are retired beach donkeys; some come to the Sanctuary because their owner's circumstances change, but they all have one thing in common - they are all lovely!
Stroll along the filed walks or ramble down to the sea - easy to follow walk guides are available from the Visitor's Centre. The walks at the main site are wheelchair and pushchair friendly. Other walks are a little more challenging.
Rest a while for a bite to eat - The Hayloft restaurant serves hot and cold meals, snacks and drinks. There are also picnic areas if you prefer to bring your own food.
Buy gifts at the Visitors' Centre - browse in the shop a the range of fun and attractive gifts and stationery items all with a donkey theme, of course!
Adopt a donkey - adopt a specially chosen donkey from The Elisabeth Svendsen Trust for Children and Donkeys and you'll receive a certificate and regular updates.
Dogs are welcome - but please keep them on a lead.
